A study on Gender Equality in the Vietnamese journalism industry conducted by Fojo-Sweden Press Institute in collaboration with the Center for Communication and Development Initiative (MDI) in September 2017 found a higher proportion of women than with the proportion of men in journalism. However, many policies and mechanisms in the industry are not aimed at addressing the problems faced by female journalists.

The above information was presented at a Press Conference on gender equality, led by the Institute of Journalism and Communication, FoJo Press Training Institute, Center for Communication and Development Initiatives (MDI) and Forum. Vietnam female journalist (WeNet), held on May 22, 2018.

However, many policies and mechanisms in the industry are not aimed at addressing the problems faced by female journalists.

The study recorded a high level of sexual harassment against journalists, over 27%. In many cases, culprits include news sources, colleagues, and superiors. However, even journalists also have an inconsistent understanding of the factors that constitute sexual harassment. Meanwhile, most of the editors have not had policies and training on this behavior prevention.

“The role of female journalists has taken a very long step in journalism. Female journalists are no longer difficult to apply for jobs due to prejudice against female journalists as before. However, group discussions with journalists conducted by FoJo and MDI show that harassment, for both female and male journalists, is a significant hindrance to the quality of work and to A section of journalists is strong, ”said Tran Le Thuy, Director of the Center for Communication and Development Initiatives (MDI) and co-founder of the Vietnam Women’s Journalists Forum (WeNet). “In the coming time, MDI and WeNet will actively support journalists in strengthening gender equality in the newsroom and support to publish information on gender equality, prevention and mitigation of consequences. acts of violence and harassment against journalists ”.

MDI and WeNet activities will aim at the following goals: Increasing awareness in the media about sexual harassment and harassment; Journalists training, both men and women, on how harassment is and how to respond; End the blame for the victim within the media and media content; Provide technical assistance to Editorial Offices to establish internal anti-harassment mechanisms and policies./.
